The founding of Vivekananda Kendra—the Living Memorial was declared in 1964. After the foundation of about nine years, Vivekananda Kendra was officially established on 7 January 1972 (the 108th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda). On that date, as the sun climbed, a saffron flag with Om wrote on it was unfolded on the Vivekananda Rock Memorial to rejoice the founding of the Vivekananda Kendra: a spiritually oriented service mission of non-monastic order.
The belief of penance was to be continued by young men and women arriving as Karyakartas of Vivekananda Kendra to publish the advice of Swami Vivekananda:
Hundreds and thousands of men and women, excited with the eagerness of holiness, strengthened with eternal faith in God, and nerved to lion’s heart by their compassion for the poor and the collapsed and the oppressed, will go over the expansion of the land, preaching the faith of salvation, the faith of help, the faith of social raising up, the faith of equality.
The twin purposes of Vivekananda Kendra are man-making and nation-building. Sri Eknath Ranade concluded that Vivekananda Kendra was to be a cadre-based organization. Young men and women whose essences long to serve the nation would be given the opportunity and the right stage to serve Good in man.
When Swami Vivekananda Rock Memorial was planned, it was modeled by E. Thanumalayan, a student of the S. T. Hindu College, Nagercoil. He created it with paraffin wax. The Memorial is the coalition of West Bengal and Tamil Nadu architecture and the design of Ramakrishna Math, Belur, West Bengal. He was sincerely praised by the then Madras Chief Minister Bhaktavatsalam for its artistic quality.
This Mandapam, which is constructed in honour of Vivekananda consists of the following divisions:
Dhyana Mandapam is the meditation Arena.
With six adjacent rooms in its main area.
Sabha Mandapam is the Assembly area including Pralima Mandapam (statue section) two rooms.
A passageway and an open prakaram(outer courtyard) around the Sabha Mandapam.
